Comfort zones are tricky. We are comfortable where we are and we don't ever want to change.
What if I told you that putting yourself out there can change the game completely?
Saturday I completed my third wedding and photographed it all indoors. I got completely out of my comfort zone and went for it. Everything turned out and is continuing to turn out. I've also had a family session and a few senior sessions this season and I am loving it! My business is flourishing and my art is being passed along to people I would have never thought about. Getting business from friends of friends or friends of past clients is literally a life saver! To be honest, I really don't know how I'm getting these gigs, but I am and I am eternally grateful.
If I wouldn't have picked up a camera and done something beyond my current abilities, I would not be shooting peoples' WEDDINGS and their life moments. Being a photographer is really nerve racking. Interacting with people you met a few months prior, or the day of their session is incredibly exciting and scary. Sometimes I don't even know how to interact with clients and I am a big pile of awkward. Despite this awkwardness and craziness, all I can think is "hey they're paying me to make them look decent, just interact!"
Confidence comes with the trickiness of comfort zones. We are so out there when we are put in a situation where we have to do a job and make sure to interact. It's crazy! Also, moving around a wedding ceremony and venue is some super crazy and scary stuff! But I loved it!! It was so fun to walk up and down the aisle to photograph this totally in love couple as they looked at each other at the alter. To be in the best position as the bride walked down the aisle was amazing and she was breathtaking. You're getting paid to do a job, so do it. OWN IT!
Being scared and timid is no longer a thing. Confidence and extravagant gestures are in and you're the model. Own it. Do what you love and keep it going. Perform for 10 hours straight and then when it comes to post production perform for more hours! You come with your product, the dynamic duo.
I am in love with my job and hope to continue to have my business flourish. Post production and live action is part of my passion. I wouldn't trade this for the world.
I remember thinking how if I did this and I started this hobby turned business, that I would be put down and people would think I'm weird or awful. Don't get me wrong, that totally happened to me. Many rude comments came my way and rumors were started, but I moved on and I kept going. I cannot let silly gossip get me down from my true worth and talent. It's not worth it to get wrapped up in something so stupid and awful, that someone would want to bring you down because you loved something. If you love something, OWN IT. Do it with all you got. Don't quit or stop because someone was jealous. In a few months, a few years, that goes right away. Everyone forgets because YOU keep going and YOU are succeeding. They can't succeed when you are putting everything into your success and your future. They give up. They can't handle how cool you are and how awesome you are to become.
Never give up and never say die (Goonies quote that definitely applies). Your flame will keep going if you feed it and you protect yourself from a little water or wind. Keep that light going because others will see it and the attraction they will have to it will be remarkable. And once that flame is so bright and unstoppable, it will always be with you no matter what.
Get out there and own it. Your worth, your passion, the big things, the simple things. They all need to be owned and shown that they will never say die. YOU are the lighter and protector of your flame, will you never say die? I urge you to do so and always always continue despite obstacles. Entrepreneurs are what we need in this world.
